Model lines and sizing
For most single-family homes, the decision is between air-cooled units in the 14–28 kW range. Generac's air-cooled lineup goes up to 28 kW (Generac 28 kW), and Kohler's tops out at 26 kW, with liquid-cooled models above that (Kohler). Both brands rate their units lower on natural gas than on propane, so compare the natural gas numbers if you have Piedmont service. Size comes from the load calculation, not the brand. Our sizing guide explains how that works.
Engines and maintenance
Generac builds its own G-Force engines and describes them as purpose-built for generator use. It lists an oil change interval of up to 2 years or 200 hours on current spec sheets (Generac spec sheet). Kohler uses its own KOHLER engines (CH740, CH1000, CH1006 depending on size) and markets them as commercial-grade, tested for 2,000 hours of continuous operation (Kohler 26RCA). Neither claim is something we can independently verify. What you can control is the maintenance schedule: ask each installer what their maintenance plan costs and how often they recommend service in Charlotte's summer heat.
Warranty: read past the “5 years”
Both brands advertise five years, but the terms differ in ways that show up in years 3–5.
- Generac: parts, labor, and travel in years 1–2; parts only in year 3; engine short block and alternator (rotor and stator) parts only in years 4–5. Scheduled maintenance is required, and warranty repairs must be done by an authorized Generac service dealer. The warranty transfers to a new owner at the same address (Generac warranty document).
- Kohler: its spec sheet describes a premium 5-year/2,000-hour limited warranty that covers parts, labor, and travel for the full period (Kohler 20RCA spec sheet). Kohler says extended warranties are available through dealers (Kohler 20RCA).
Either way, warranty terms depend on proper installation, registration, and maintenance. Ask the installer to register the unit and give you the warranty document for the exact model.
Transfer switches and load management
This matters a lot in Charlotte, where summer AC is often the biggest load in the house. Generac's 200-amp Smart Switch can manage up to four AC loads on its own and up to eight more large loads with add-on modules (Generac spec sheet). Kohler's approach uses a load shed kit with its RXT switch, which manages up to six loads, including two AC units (Kohler accessories sheet). Kohler also promotes PowerBoost for starting large motors without dropping other loads (Kohler). Both approaches can keep a mid-size generator from overloading. The right choice depends on how many large loads you have and which ones you're willing to have wait. Stick with the matching brand of switch: Generac's warranty excludes damage caused by a non-Generac switch (Generac warranty).
Sound
On paper the two brands are close: roughly mid-50s to mid-60s dB(A) during weekly exercise and high 60s at load, measured at 23 feet. The brands measure differently, though. Generac measures from the front and notes that other sides may be louder (Generac spec sheet). Kohler's spec sheet reports the lowest of eight points measured around the generator (Kohler spec sheet). Kohler's current 20RCA page lists 64/69 dB(A), while its 2023 spec sheet lists 66/70 (20RCA page). On a tight Charlotte lot, where the unit sits relative to bedrooms and the neighbor's windows will make a bigger difference than the brand.
Dealer network and service in Charlotte
Generac describes its dealer network as the largest nationwide (Generac brochure), and Kohler says it has a nationwide dealer network (Kohler). Both have dealer locators (Generac, Kohler). For a Charlotte homeowner, the useful questions are local ones:
- Who will do warranty service, and are they authorized by the manufacturer? (Generac requires an authorized service dealer for warranty work.)
- Do they stock common parts locally, and how do they prioritize existing customers after a major storm?
- Do they handle the electrical, the gas piping, and the permits themselves, or subcontract?
- What does their maintenance plan include?
How to choose (fact-based, not a ranking)
- If you have several AC systems or other large loads, compare how each brand's switch would manage them in your home, and get it in writing.
- If labor coverage in years 3–5 matters to you, the published warranty terms differ. Read both and ask about extended plans.
- If noise is the concern, focus on placement and ask the installer for the published sound data on the exact model.
- If local service is thin for one brand in your area, that's a practical reason to lean toward the other.
- Other brands, such as Briggs & Stratton and Cummins, also make home standby generators (HomeGuide). An installer may quote them, and the same questions apply.

Frequently asked questions
Is Kohler quieter than Generac?
The published numbers are close, and the two brands measure differently. Generac lists 67 dB(A) at normal load and 55–57 dB(A) in its low-speed test mode for its 20–24 kW units, measured 23 feet from the front (Generac spec sheet). Kohler lists 56 dB(A) during its short exercise and 67 dB(A) at full speed for the 26RCA (Kohler 26RCA), and its spec sheet says it reports the lowest of 8 points measured around the unit (Kohler spec sheet). Placement relative to your windows and your neighbor's house matters more than a few decibels on paper.
Which brand has the better warranty?
Both offer a 5-year limited warranty on their air-cooled home units, but the coverage differs. Generac covers parts, labor, and travel in years 1–2, parts in year 3, and engine and alternator parts only in years 4–5 (Generac warranty). Kohler's spec sheet describes a 5-year/2,000-hour warranty covering parts, labor, and travel for the full period (Kohler spec sheet). Read the warranty for the exact model you are quoted, and ask about extended coverage.
Is Kohler Generators now Rehlko?
Kohler says its generator business is part of Rehlko, formerly Kohler Energy, and that homeowners still get KOHLER-branded home standby generators, dealer network, and warranty support (Kohler).
Can I use a different brand of transfer switch?
It's not a good idea. Generac's warranty highly recommends a Generac transfer switch and excludes damage caused by a non-Generac switch (Generac warranty). Kohler's load shed kit requires a Kohler RXT or RDT transfer switch (Kohler accessories spec sheet). Plan on matching the brands.
Is GeneratorQuoteMatch affiliated with Generac or Kohler?
No. We are an independent quote-matching service. We are not a dealer for either brand, we receive nothing from either manufacturer, and this comparison is based only on information the manufacturers publish.
Can I ask for quotes on a specific brand?
Yes. Mention the brand in the optional message on our form. Some installers carry one brand and some carry both, so we can't promise a quote for a particular brand, but you can always ask an installer what they carry before scheduling a visit.
